What it’s like

Walk through the real sets and costumes from Game of Thrones, from Winterfell to the Destroyed Throne Room, all under one roof.

This is a self-guided wander through the actual sets built for the show, so you set the pace rather than following a guide with a flag. Beyond The Wall, Castle Black, Winterfell, Dragonstone, King's Landing and the Destroyed Throne Room are all here, and the photo stops are built into the route rather than an afterthought. If you've got a fan in the family who knows their houses from their dragons, this is where they finally get to stand in the throne room properly.

There's a green screen dragon ride experience partway round, which you can buy afterwards to take home. It's a nice one to save for near the end rather than getting distracted by it early, since the rest of the tour is dense with things to look at. Audio guides and a souvenir handbook are available if you want more depth than the signage gives you, useful for adults who want the trivia as much as the kids want the sets.

Being entirely indoors, it's a solid pick when the weather's grim, no soggy queuing outside. A visit runs 2 to 3 hours on average, though the Lobby Café, the Mess Hall restaurant and the gift shop tempt plenty of people into staying longer. Outside food isn't allowed in, bar medical or infant needs, so factor in eating there if you're planning a longer stay. Booking isn't compulsory but it's strongly recommended, especially weekends and holidays, and last entry is 4pm.

Access has clearly been thought about, with step-free routes, accessible toilets, a changing places facility and a sensory room. Wheelchairs can be loaned free but numbers are limited, so book that ahead rather than hoping one's spare on the day. Parking is free and on site, which takes one cost off the day at least.

Plan your visit

How long should we plan for?

Most visits run 2 to 3 hours, but the café, restaurant and gift shop pull a lot of people into staying longer. Last entry is 4pm.

Do we need to book ahead?

It's not compulsory, but they strongly recommend it for weekends, holidays and peak seasons. You can sometimes book on the day if slots are free.

Is it a guided tour?

Self-guided, so you move at your own pace. Staff are around throughout if you've got questions, and guided tours can be bought separately for groups or private events.

What if it's raining?

The whole tour is indoors, so rain, snow or a grey day doesn't change the plan at all.

Can we bring our own food?

Outside food and drink aren't allowed inside, apart from medical or infant needs. The Lobby Café and Mess Hall restaurant cover meals, snacks and dietary options including vegan and gluten-free.

Is there anywhere to eat properly?

The Lobby Café does lighter bakes and hot drinks, and the Mess Hall Restaurant does heartier meals. There's also a pre-booked Seven Kingdoms Afternoon Tea at £30 a head.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Yes, step-free routes and accessible facilities run throughout. Wheelchair loans are free but limited, so it's worth arranging one in advance.

Is parking included?

Free on-site parking is available for everyone, including accessible spaces.

Are there discounts for families or groups?

Group, family and school rates are available and they change through the year, so it's worth a look when you book.
