What it’s like
Guided walks through Belfast's city centre history, from the Troubles to the Golden Mile, on foot with a local guide.
You turn up at Belfast City Hall gates and walk the city with a guide for a couple of hours, hearing the history as you go rather than reading it off a plaque. There are a few different routes: A History of Terror digs into the Troubles and ends at the Beacon of Hope, Best of Belfast covers the city centre highlights, and there's also a 1798 rebellion tour and a South Belfast route taking in the Golden Mile. Most run around 1.5 to 1.75 miles, and the site's right that the city centre is flat, so it's an easy walk rather than a slog.
A History of Terror isn't recommended for under 12s, and that's the one to skip with younger kids. Best of Belfast has no age minimum, and under-12s don't need a ticket at all unless they want the audio headset. Adults and children 12 and over pay £24 each, and there's a booking fee on top, which stings a bit for what's essentially a walk with commentary.
Tours go ahead rain or shine, so bring a coat rather than hoping for sun. Booking ahead is the sensible move, especially in high season when tours do sell out, but walk-ups get a spot if there's room and you can just pay the guide in cash. There's no dedicated toilet break built in, though guides will stop at a café if asked, and City Hall itself has accessible loos before you set off.
Give it two and a half to three hours depending on the tour you pick. Dogs are welcome on the walk, and the flat, step-free route means it works fine for wheelchair users and buggies too.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
£24 for an adult or a child aged 12 and over, plus a booking fee. Under-12s go free unless they want an audio headset.
Do we need to book?
Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially in high season when tours sell out. Walk-ups are taken if there's space, but bring cash to pay the guide.
Is it suitable for kids?
A History of Terror isn't recommended for under 12s, though it's left to your judgement. Best of Belfast has no minimum age at all.
How long does it take?
Between two and a half and three hours depending on which tour you're on, covering 1.5 to 1.75 miles of flat city centre.
What happens if it rains?
Tours run rain or shine. Bring an umbrella or a light raincoat, since only a handful have been cancelled in eight years, and that was for snow or storms.
Where do we park?
On-street parking is limited to two hours and only free on Sundays. Hi-Park or Castlecourt car park is a five minute walk away and costs £13 to £15 for three hours.
Are there toilets?
Belfast City Hall, where you start, has accessible public toilets. There's no dedicated comfort break during the walk itself, but guides will arrange a café stop if you ask.
