What it’s like

Bouldering walls up to 4.5m with a dedicated kids area, no ropes needed and no experience required.

This is bouldering, not roped climbing, so nobody's clipping you into a harness. You climb, you fall onto a mat, you try again on a different coloured route. The walls go up to 4.5m but your feet are rarely more than 3m off the ground, and the site is upfront that it can be a bit scary the first time you look down, which is sort of the point.

Under 5s are restricted to the dedicated kids area, and that bit needs booking ahead, unlike the main hall where you just turn up. Anyone under 16 has to be actively supervised the whole time by an adult who's with them, not just in the building, so this isn't a drop-off activity unless your child's done the Junior Assessment and is 13 to 16. Trainers are compulsory, no bare feet, and you'll need a top on when you're on the wall.

Pricing rewards a bit of planning. An under 10 goes in for £9.50, an under 16 for £11, and an adult pays £14 unless you come off-peak, which is any time before 4pm on a weekday, when it drops to £11.50. Shoe hire is £3.60 and chalk another £2 if you haven't got your own. Mondays have a 2 for 1 offer on adult entry, worth knowing if there are two grown-ups climbing and one child in tow.

There's a café on site for the inevitable post-climb snack, plus a gift shop if someone needs a memento, and spectators don't pay to come in and watch, they just sign a risk form at the door. Opening hours stretch later in school holidays, but Sundays finish at 6pm year round, so it's not a late one on a weekend.

How much does it cost?

£14 for an adult, £9.50 for an under 10, £11 for under 16s and concessions at £11.50. Off-peak adult entry (before 4pm weekdays) is £11.50.

Do we need to book?

Not for the main climbing area, you just turn up. The kids area is booking only.

Is it OK for a young child?

Under 5s can only climb in the dedicated kids area, and that needs booking in advance.

Do kids need supervising?

Yes, every under 16 needs a responsible adult actively watching them the whole time. Those aged 13 to 16 can climb unsupervised once they've passed the Junior Assessment.

What should we wear?

Clean trainers, no bare feet. You can hire climbing shoes for £3.60 if you don't have your own, and chalk is £2.

Do you do birthday parties?

Not yet, they say parties are coming soon.

Can I just watch instead of climbing?

Spectating adults don't pay entry, though you do need to fill in a risk acknowledgement form to get into the climbing areas.

Is there food on site?

There's a café for coffee, snacks and food, plus a water refill station and a gift shop.

What are the opening hours?

Term time it's 10am to 9pm on weekdays (12pm start on Mondays), 10am to 8pm Saturday and 10am to 6pm Sunday. School holidays open at 10am every day and run to 9pm on weekdays.

Do you need to be fit or experienced to climb?

The site says if you can climb your stairs you can get on the walls. Plenty of the routes are beginner level.

Is there a cheaper way to climb regularly?

Monthly memberships start at £50 for concessions, and family memberships range from £82.50 up to £152.50 depending on how many adults and children. There's also a 10 punch pass for £120.
