What it’s like
Bouldering rooms, roped lead climbing and a Crazy Climb obstacle room with spinning holds and spider webs, all under one roof.
Four bouldering rooms cover everything from comp-style problems to slabs and a steep cave, plus a digital training board if anyone in your group takes it seriously. There's a bouldering zone built specifically for little ones, and the Crazy Climb room is the bit that'll get talked about on the way home, with spinning holds, spider webs and balancing towers rather than straight walls. If your kids are past the toddler stage and want ropes rather than crash mats, there's lead climbing with auto-belays too.
Classes are split by age: Little Monkeys for 4 to 6 year olds, Rock Monkeys for 7 to 10s and 11 and ups, Lead Monkeys for 12 and over. Tasters run around £16.50 to £18.50 if you want to try before committing to a course, and the courses themselves sit around £65 to £80, so this isn't a casual drop-in sport once you're past standard entry. Standard entry is £16 for an adult, £12 under 18, £8.50 under 7, and that's before shoe and harness hire, which adds another few pounds each. Bring your own kit if you've got it, closed-toe shoes are compulsory and sandals or wellies won't get you past the desk.
The café does proper food, pizzas, sandwiches, homemade salads, and cakes that are locally sourced rather than shrink-wrapped, so you're not stuck with vending machine snacks after an hour of climbing. Parking is free, with about 15 spaces by the centre and more on Luckwell Road if that fills up, and it's a five-minute walk from Parson Street station if you'd rather not drive. Worth knowing the café itself isn't step-free, though they'll bring food to an alternative spot if that's an issue, and some areas of the centre are stairs-only.
For a birthday, the Crazy Climb Party runs 2.25 hours at £24 a head for ages 5 and up, with pizza, sweets and a private room thrown in. Turn up more than 15 minutes late to one of those and you might not get to join in, which seems a bit strict for a kids' party but there it is.
