What it’s like

Four galleries of projections and spatial sound you wander through at your own pace, with a bubbles-and-music class for tots.

This is a walk-through art experience rather than a museum with labels to read. Four galleries, Beyond Reality, Colour In Motion, The World Around Us and The Art of Abstraction, use projections and sound to put you inside the artwork rather than in front of it. You go round in whatever order you fancy and most people take about 90 minutes, though the site reckons on up to two hours if you're not rushing.

There's a separate Multi-Sensory Tots class if you've got a younger one, with sing-along songs, props and floating bubbles, which sounds a gentler way in than turning a toddler loose among the main installations. Worth knowing though: the site compares the general content to a PG film rating, so some of it may not suit younger or more sensitive kids, and an adult has to be with children throughout.

Entry is timed, and they're firm about booking ahead, walk-up tickets on the day are limited and not guaranteed. Last entry is two hours before closing. Everything's step free with lifts down to the gallery level, and there's a café bar for sandwiches and drinks, though you can't bring outside food or drink in with you.

One faff worth flagging: if you're going on a Friday or Saturday, under-18s need to be in by 4pm, because it switches to an 18+ Lates crowd after that. Fine if you're planning a daytime visit anyway, less fine if you fancied a Saturday evening family trip and didn't check the hours first.

Plan your visit

How long does a visit take?

Most people spend around 90 minutes across the four galleries, though you could stretch it closer to two hours going at a slower pace.

Do we need to book ahead?

Yes, entry is by timed slot and they push you to book online in advance. A few tickets are sometimes available on the day but not reliably.

Is it suitable for young children?

Under-3s go free but still need a ticket, and there's a dedicated tots class with music and bubbles. The main galleries are rated more like a PG film though, so some content might not suit sensitive or very young kids.

Can I bring a pushchair?

There's a buggy park and cloakroom for folding it up, but occupied pushchairs aren't allowed once you're in the galleries themselves.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Step free throughout with automatic doors at entry and lifts down to the gallery level, plus accessible toilets. Complimentary tickets are available for essential carers.

What about food and drink?

There's a café bar doing breakfast, sandwiches and drinks, but you can't bring your own food or drink in.

Can under-18s visit in the evening?

Not on Fridays or Saturdays after 4pm, when it becomes an 18+ Lates session. Stick to a daytime slot if you've got kids with you.

Can I change my ticket if plans change?

You can amend the date or time up to 48 hours before your slot for £1.50 a ticket, but bookings can't be cancelled outright.

Are there family or concession tickets?

Family tickets cover two adults and two children, and there are discounts for students, seniors, schools and groups too.
