What it’s like

This is a restaurant that only admits over-12s, so leave the younger ones at home and book a proper sit-down meal instead.

This one's not for the buggy brigade. Fish and Forest is a sustainably-caught fish and seafood restaurant in York that sets its minimum age at 12, so it's really a place for older kids and teenagers who can sit through a proper meal rather than anywhere for a family day out.

The food is small plates at lunchtime and à la carte in the evening, open Wednesday to Saturday, lunch from 12 to 2.30 and dinner from 5.30 to 9. Tables of one or two get 1 hour 45 minutes, tables of three to six get a full 2 hours, which the restaurant reckons is enough for three courses without feeling rushed.

There's no children's menu, which makes sense given the age rule, and they're upfront that they don't tweak dishes for fussy eaters or dislikes. If anyone in your group has a genuine allergy or intolerance, or is vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian, they'll adjust for that but need 48 hours notice and you have to flag it when you book. Worth mentioning if you've got a teenager who's dairy-free or similar, since it needs sorting in advance rather than at the table.

Booking is required, and with sittings capped at under two hours even for bigger groups, this reads as a place for a focused meal out rather than a lingering one.
