What it’s like

Get up close with real dinosaur bones, a T. rex skull and a roaring soundtrack, right by Hull marina.

This is a small museum with a big draw: actual dinosaur bones you're allowed to touch, a Tyrannosaurus rex skull to gawp at, and Triceratops bones to go with it. There's a sandbox where kids can build their own volcano, and the roars piped in do a good job of setting the mood before you've even seen a bone.

It's only open at weekends, 11am to 5pm, with last entry at 4:15pm, so it's not somewhere you can drop into on a Tuesday afternoon. Entry is £5 for an adult and £3 for a child, or £15 for a family ticket, which is fair enough for the hour or so it'll probably take you to get round. There's no booking system, you just turn up.

The first floor is stairs only, but the ground floor galleries are accessible and admission there is free if stairs are out of the question, which is a decent bit of thought from a museum this size. Parking nearby is free on-street but limited to three hours, or there's a paid multi-storey if you want longer. Being two minutes from The Deep means you can easily fold this into a bigger day out around the marina without much extra walking.

There's a gift shop on the way out, which your kids will have clocked the moment you walked in. School visits are catered for too, if you're thinking beyond the weekend trip.
