Creekside Discovery Centre

London
What it’s like
Wellies on, down the sloped bank into Deptford Creek to dip for animals and read the mud like a history book.
The main event here is the creek itself. At low tide you're led down the only sloped access point on Deptford Creek to go looking for what lives in the water and mud, catching and identifying creatures, spotting what the tideline tells you about the area's history. There's family river dipping pitched at five and up, bat walks, bird surveys, and clay workshops if you fancy something less muddy for a change.
You can't just wander down to the creek yourself. It's deep mud and a big tidal range, so every visit into the water is guided, either on a family session or a school trip. That's not a bag though, it's the whole point of the place, someone who knows the creek walking you through what you're looking at rather than you guessing.
Term time has a quirk worth knowing before you plan around it: the centre runs as a closed site from 10 till 2.30 most weekdays because school groups are in. Turn up outside those hours or book a proper family session and you're fine. There's a small fee for family learning activities, kept deliberately low, and local residents can get a voucher through the booking page that makes it free.
Skip the car. There's no parking on site, though you can leave a car five minutes' walk away on Frankham Street. Public transport is genuinely easy though, five minutes from Greenwich DLR and mainline, and Deptford stations aren't far either. The building itself is fully accessible but the creek is a wild riverbed, so wheelchair users will need a hand over the rough ground and the water itself isn't accessible at all.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
There's a small fee for family activities, kept low deliberately. Local residents can apply for a voucher on the booking page and get in free.
Do we need to book ahead?
Book ahead for family sessions, you can't just turn up and walk into the creek on your own. Each ticket covers one person, so accompanying adults need their own ticket too.
Can we visit during the school holidays or term time?
School groups fill the site most weekdays in term time, so it closes to everyone else between 10 and 2.30. Outside those hours, or during holidays, you're fine to visit.
Is there parking?
No car park on site. Nearest parking is a five minute walk away on Frankham Street, and disabled spaces need arranging in advance by contacting the centre.
What age is family river dipping suitable for?
Five and up for the river dipping sessions. Other family learning activities are pitched at different ages depending on the event.
Is it accessible for wheelchair users?
The building's fully accessible and the high tide activities work for wheelchairs. The creek itself doesn't, it's a wild riverbed with rough ground, so that bit needs assistance or isn't possible.
