BUGGY FRIENDLY

Yes

What it’s like

120 acres of trees to wander, red squirrels to spot, and gravel paths that actually work with a buggy.

You're here to walk, not to be entertained at every turn, and that's the appeal. Over 7,000 trees and shrubs from across the globe spread across 120 acres, with gravel paths looping round the lake that make it properly buggy-friendly rather than just technically so. Kids get natural play along the way and seasonal family trails to follow, but the bit they'll remember is the Red Squirrel Enclosure, so save that for when little legs start flagging.

It suits younger children well since under 12s go in free, and a family ticket for two adults and two juniors is £39. Adults are £13.50, which feels steep for a walk in the woods until you remember you've got the whole day and a café doing proper light lunches at the end of it. Most people spend two to three hours here, though nothing stops you wandering longer if the weather's kind.

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout, plus there's an 11-acre off-lead area included in your ticket if yours needs a proper run. Paths are mostly gravel and manageable, though some stretches are uneven or sloped since it's a natural landscape, and there's no hoist facility if that matters for your visit. Ticks are a real thing in the woods and long grass here, so a quick check of kids and pets afterwards is sensible.

One thing worth knowing: this ticket only covers the Arboretum, not Castle Howard House and Gardens next door, so don't turn up expecting one to get you into the other.

Plan your visit

How much are tickets?

£13.50 for adults, £8 for juniors aged 12 to 16, and under 12s go free. A family ticket covering two adults and two juniors is £39.

Do we need to book ahead?

It's recommended in school holidays and busy periods, but tickets are often available on the day.

How long should we plan for?

Most people spend two to three hours exploring, though the full 120 acres will happily fill more if you're not watching the clock.

Is it good for a toddler in a buggy?

Yes, the gravel paths around the lake and towards the Red Squirrel Enclosure are set up well for prams and buggies.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs on leads are welcome in the arboretum, café and shop, and there's an 11-acre off-lead area included with your ticket.

What are the opening times?

The arboretum runs from 2nd March to the end of November, 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4pm.

Is there anywhere to eat?

There's an on-site café doing seasonal, locally sourced food, light lunches, cakes and hot drinks. Picnics in the grounds are fine too.

Does this ticket get us into Castle Howard itself?

The Arboretum runs separately from Castle Howard House and Gardens and needs its own ticket.

Is there parking?

Free parking sits close to the Visitor Centre on a hard-standing gravel car park, with two Blue Badge spaces nearest the entrance.
