What it’s like

Free Lego club, coding and craft sessions for primary age kids, plus Open Access hours that stretch well past a normal library day.

This is one for the regulars rather than a one-off day trip. There's a free Lego club for primary school kids, coding sessions for the over-8s, and a Chatterbooks reading group for 7 to 11 year olds, all free and all worth building into a weekly routine rather than treating as a special outing. The monthly arts and craft sessions are aimed at 7 to 11s too, and there are holiday activities laid on for primary age children when term ends.

Staffed hours are fairly ordinary, 10am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with just a short window on Saturday morning from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Wednesday and Sunday have no staff at all. The clever bit is the Open Access system, which lets you in without staff most days from 8am into the evening, including bank holidays other than Christmas Day. That's handy if you need somewhere quiet with your kids outside the usual 9 to 5, though it does mean no one's there to help you find a book or sort out a card during those hours.

There's no cost for any of this, which makes it an easy add to a week rather than something you have to plan a budget around. Quiet sessions are available if a full-on library atmosphere with excitable kids isn't what you're after that day.
