What it’s like
Free wetland trails in the city where kids can spot birds, butterflies and insects from proper hides.
This is a stretch of wetland and meadow tucked into the city, and the whole point is slowing down and looking. There are walking trails threading through it, bird hides to duck into, and enough butterflies and insects along the way that a short walk turns into an hour without anyone noticing. Wildflowers do their thing depending on the season, so what you spot in May won't be what you spot in August.
It's free, which makes it an easy one to add to a weekend without checking your bank balance first. There's a car park on site and the paths are wheelchair and pushchair friendly, so a buggy or wheels won't rule it out. Dogs are welcome too, as long as they're on a lead, which is only fair given how much wildlife is about.
The one thing to know before you go is that greenway construction work started closing sections of path from late October 2025, expected to run for around six months. The main trail is staying open through most of that, so you won't turn up to find the whole place shut, but a route you fancied might be blocked off on the day.
There's no food on site. Little ones who like ticking off birds and bugs will get the most out of it, but honestly the bird hides are the bit worth saving for last, since that's where the patience pays off.
