What it’s like

A field full of tanks and military vehicles, some you can climb into, with real tank rides and driving experiences on selected days.

This one's for kids who are already obsessed with tanks, or the ones who'll get obsessed the second they see a Chieftain rumbling past the café. You can climb inside one of the vehicles, wander through interactive displays and WWII scenes, and if you time it right, watch tanks on manoeuvres from the outdoor viewing area while you eat. Tank driving and tank ride experiences are also bookable, though these need arranging in advance and aren't just a walk-up add-on.

The catch is the tanks themselves don't run every day. It's mostly Saturdays and Sundays plus selected Wednesdays, so a random Tuesday visit means static exhibits only, still interesting but not the full spectacle. Given admission is £12 and under fives go free, it's worth checking which day you're picking before you commit to the drive over.

Ages 8 to 80 is the site's own range, and that tracks. Younger kids might get restless among rifles and artillery cases, but anyone at secondary school age or above who likes machines will happily lose an hour or two here. It runs April to October, Wednesday to Sunday, 10 till 4, with Bank Holiday Mondays thrown in from April.

Parking's free and there's plenty of it. The café does light refreshments on the days it's open, and you can bring your own picnic and eat outside overlooking the tank driving course instead, which is arguably the better seat anyway. It's outdoor, so a wet day means wellies and a coat rather than a change of plan.
