What it’s like
Free hands-on animal learning, from farm favourites to exotic species, with info boards to read as you go.
This is a browse-and-touch sort of visit rather than a ride-and-show one. Kids get close to domestic, farm and exotic animals and there are information boards dotted about covering diet, habitat and which species are endangered, so it's as much a quiet lesson as a day out. The hands-on bit is the part that'll stick, more than the reading.
It's free entry, which is the obvious reason to put it on the list if you're watching the pennies during the holidays. Opening hours are 10:30am to 3:45pm daily, but last entry is 3pm, so don't turn up at half three expecting to get in for a proper look round.
Every under-16 needs an adult with them, no exceptions, so this isn't one where an older sibling can mind the younger ones while you nip off. Given the mix of information boards and animal contact, it suits a fairly wide age range: toddlers will enjoy the animals even if the reading goes over their heads, and older kids get more out of the endangered species detail.
