What it’s like

A guided tour round a genuine North Yorkshire castle that only opens its doors one day a week.

This is a working, lived-in castle rather than a museum set up for visitors, and it shows. Tuesdays are the only day you can get in, split between a 10am open house and a 2pm guided tour, so you're building your whole week around one slot rather than turning up on a whim.

The guided tour is the main event, walking you through the historic rooms and grounds with someone who actually knows the building. There are also educational visits that get kids hands-on with restoration work, which is a nice angle if you've got a child who's into how old buildings actually get looked after rather than just walking past the furniture. The gardens and grounds are there to wander too, and after an hour of guided history that's usually where the kids perk back up.

Because it's a private residence, booking in advance is essential, there's no just showing up at the gates. It's set up for group bookings and school visits as well as families, and there are party rooms on site if you fancy something a bit different for a birthday. Given the single open day, this is one to build a whole Tuesday around rather than squeeze in on the way to somewhere else.

What days is it open?

Tuesdays only, with an open house at 10am and a guided tour at 2pm.

Do we need to book ahead?

Yes, it's a private residence so advance booking is essential. You can't just turn up.

What do kids actually do there?

They join a guided tour of the castle, and there are educational visits with hands-on restoration training. The gardens and grounds are there to explore too.

Can we get food there?

There's on site food available.

Is it good for a birthday party?

There are party rooms on site and it takes group bookings, so it works for that if you fancy something a bit different from a soft play do.
