What it’s like
Guided 4x4 green lane driving across England and Wales, from single day tours to a four day coast to coast trip.
This one is about getting behind the wheel yourself rather than being taken somewhere. You drive your own 4x4 on green lanes with a guide who knows which routes are legal and which ones will actually be fun, and a day out covers 50 to 60 miles with a proper 6 to 7 hours of driving. They start around 9am and finish around 4 or 5pm, with a mid-morning break, half an hour for lunch, and another stop in the afternoon if anyone spots something worth a photo.
A UK day tour is £95, and if you fancy something bigger the Coast to Coast runs four days for £380. There are longer multi-day tours too, stretching out to ten days for anyone who wants to properly disappear into it. This is one for the grown-ups behind the wheel rather than a kids' activity as such, so it suits families where an older child is happy riding along for a long day of off-road driving.
Worth knowing before you commit: they won't take SUVs like a Freelander because the ground clearance isn't up to it, so check your vehicle's suited first. Trips also need a minimum of 3 to 4 vehicles to go ahead, and if a late cancellation drops the numbers below that, you might not get a refund, which feels a bit harsh but is fair enough given other people will have booked hotels and taken time off work around it.
Dogs are allowed as long as they're kept under control near livestock, so bring a lead and something to clean up with if you're taking one along for the ride.
