What it’s like

Weekly sections for ages 4 to 25, from Squirrels on a Wednesday through to Scout Network, building skills as the kids get older.

This is the local Sea Scout setup, split into age groups that meet on different evenings. Squirrels get an hour on Wednesday teatime, Beavers follow on Thursday, and once a child's old enough for Cubs they move to a longer Wednesday evening slot. Scouts meet Monday nights for a full two hours, and after that there's Explorers and then Scout Network for the older teens and young adults who want to stick with it.

The age range runs from 4 right up to 25, which is a proper long ladder if a child starts young and stays the course. Each section builds on the last, so the games and challenges get more grown-up as the kids move from Squirrels into Cubs and beyond. A four-year-old starting in Squirrels is doing something quite different from an 18-year-old in Scout Network, but it's the same thread running through it.

Evenings are fixed by section rather than by term dates you'd find on a school calendar, so it's worth knowing which night belongs to which age group before you turn up. Mondays are Scouts, Wednesdays split between Squirrels and Cubs, and Thursdays are Beavers. There's no booking link listed, so getting a child signed up will mean going through the group directly rather than clicking a button online.
