The National Water Sports Centre there has a lake with two heights of rope course over the water, plus mini golf and a free play park to round off the day, and it takes children from age one with tickets from £13. Out at Ilkeston, the Nutbrook Canal offers something calmer, a free fishing session with Canal & River Trust coaches, kit, bait and day licence all included for ages six and up. If you want something active and are happy to pay for it, Holme Pierrepont's rope course is the one to book ahead for, since parking, food and toilets are all on site and it suits a full day out. If budget matters more, or you have a patient six year old rather than a toddler, the free canal fishing at Ilkeston is the better shout, though it does need booking in advance too.
