Observatories & Planetariums in Manchester

There are only two proper options for this in the Manchester area, and they could not be more different. Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, a longer trip out to Macclesfield, is built around the UNESCO-listed radio telescope, with a Space Dome, outdoor trails and a cafe on site. Huddersfield Observatory, also some way out, is run by a members' society who put on solar telescope sessions and star talks a couple of times a month, with tickets from £3. Jodrell Bank is the one for a full day out, with parking, a gift shop and picnic areas, and it is wheelchair accessible, so it suits toddlers who just want to wander the grounds as much as older kids keen on the science. Huddersfield Observatory is smaller and cheaper, better suited to older children who can sit through a talk, and it has its own parking and toilets. Both are outdoor visits at heart, so check the weather before you set off.
