Free exhibition of over 50 original drawings by French artist Paul Sarrut depicting First World War soldiers, including Indian Army units, on the Western Front.
This free exhibition at the National Army Museum brings together over 50 original drawings and works on paper by French artist Paul Sarrut, many displayed publicly for the first time in over a century. Sarrut served as a liaison officer and interpreter with British, French and Indian units during the First World War, and his sketches capture everyday life in camps, billets and medical stations, with Indian soldiers forming the subject of some of his most detailed studies. Alongside the drawings are uniforms, photographs, archives and medals, including the Victoria Crosses awarded to Lieutenant Frank de Pass and Sepoy Khudadad Khan. Interactive displays feature extracts from the diary of Jemadar Kirpal Singh of the 34th Sikh Pioneers, read in Punjabi by his grandson. The exhibition is on Floor 2, accessed via the main lift, and visitors should allow around 30 minutes to see it.
