Free online exhibition exploring eight extinct or endangered birds from Manchester Museum's stores.

Dead or Alive: Birds in our World is a free online exhibition from Manchester Museum uncovering the stories of eight birds, now either extinct or endangered, usually kept hidden away in the Museum's stores rather than on display. Using archival material and 3D technology, you can follow each bird's journey from where it was collected to why it ended up preserved in a museum basement, learning about its colours, habits and fate along the way. The exhibition also looks at what these stories mean for conservation and for understanding colonial collecting practices, and features artworks by young Manchester-based artists inspired by the bird collections. As this is an online exhibition, it can be viewed on the Museum's website rather than in the galleries, and runs from 13 October 2026 to 31 December 2027. There was also a separate online launch event held 4-5pm on Tuesday 13 October 2026, giving people the chance to hear from the academics, curators and young artists involved, though that one-off session has now passed.</description> <parameter name="listing_type">event
