Open evening stargazing at Derby's Flamsteed Observatory, usually the second Saturday of the month.
The Derby and District Astronomical Society opens up its Flamsteed Observatory, north-west of Derby near Brailsford, for a monthly observing session, usually held on the second Saturday of the month. Both members and visitors are welcome to come along and look through the observatory's 10-inch Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, which sits on a computerised GOTO mount under a rotating dome, along with a piggybacked 80mm refractor linked to a camera that gives a live view on screen of the moon, planets and deep sky objects. Schools, scouts, guides and other private groups can also arrange visits by contacting the Society's Outreach Officer. Anyone visiting the site, whether a member or not, does so at their own risk, and it's a good idea to get in touch beforehand to confirm a session is going ahead, as sessions are weather dependent and timings can vary.
