Zoos & Wildlife Parks in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Zoo is the big one, up on its hillside site with over 2,500 animals, daily keeper talks and a fair bit of walking between enclosures, from £7.50. For something further out, Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian has Scotland's only cheetah plus rescued brown bears and a reptile house with over 160 species, and there's indoor play if the weather turns. Out at Bathgate, the Scottish Owl Centre lets you get close to more than 140 owls, with a flying display and the chance to hold one for a photo. For younger children, the Owl Centre and Five Sisters both set an age range from three up, so check that before booking for toddlers. Five Sisters has a restaurant and on site food if you want to make a day of it, while the Owl Centre keeps things simple with a picnic area. A longer trip out to Lauder brings Bird Gardens Scotland, good for a flamingo encounter and geese, swans and pheasants in the grounds, with dog friendly grounds too.
