Model Villages & Miniature Railways in Edinburgh
Both of the places on this list are a drive out rather than round the corner. Out at Bo'ness, the Museum of Scottish Railways has a vintage Glasgow Subway car to clamber into and signals you can have a go at working, with free entry to the exhibition halls and free parking once you get there. A drive out to Dunfermline gets you Lathalmond Railway Museum, where Sunday afternoons bring steam and brake van rides on a real standard gauge line alongside a narrow gauge railway and two model displays, tickets from £2 and best suited to ages 4 to 16. For toddlers and buggies, Bo'ness is the easier stop, with step free access, toilets, a cafe and baby change laid on, plus somewhere to eat on site. Lathalmond suits children old enough to enjoy the ride itself, and its steam trains only run on Sundays, so plan around that if you fancy the brake van rather than just the models.
