Woodland & Forest in Belfast

Woodland here means proper free walks rather than manicured parks. Throne Wood in Newtownabbey has ponds to peer into and, at dusk, seven kinds of bat overhead, all with baby change and toilets on site. Out at Larne, Clements Wood is a free wander through hazel copses, marshland and grassland with spring flowers to spot. Glasswater Wood, a longer trip out to Downpatrick, offers broadleaved trails, though it's closed until winter 2026, so it's one to save for later. For now, Throne Wood is the easiest choice for families, close to the centre with facilities and space for pushchairs. Clements Wood in Larne has parking and open ground to roam, good for a longer outdoor stretch if you're happy with the drive. None of the three charge for entry, so the only real cost is fuel and time on the road.
