Viewpoints & Picnic Spots in Belfast

There's only one on the list so far, but it's a proper one. A drive out to Newtownards gets you Island Hill, a free circular walk that leads across a causeway to Rough Island. The causeway only shows itself at low tide, so timing your visit matters, but get it right and you have views right across Strangford Lough while you eat your sandwiches. It's free, which helps, and the parking is right there along with an accessible toilet and blue badge parking, so it works for wheelchair users and pushchairs alike, though the ground underfoot on the causeway itself is uneven. There's a picnic area if you'd rather stop and eat than walk on with food in hand. It suits older children who can manage the walk more than toddlers who'll need carrying, and it's entirely outdoor with no shelter, so check the tide times and the forecast before you set off.
