Gardens & Arboretums in Reading

None of these gardens are in Reading itself, so treat this as a proper outing rather than a quick stroll. Out at Hook, West Green House Garden has walled gardens to wander from £12, with under-14s in mind, and in winter it puts on a trail of lit-up animal sculptures after dark. A drive out to Egham brings you to The Savill Garden, landscaped woodland and formal planting with a café and gift shop either side of the walk. Further out again, Harcourt Arboretum near Oxford has 130 acres of woodland and wildflower meadow, plus a play area and space for den-building. For plant lovers, Oxford Botanic Garden is the one to save for last, over 5,000 species with trail backpacks and a geocache hunt to keep kids hunting for the next find. West Green House works best for a shorter visit with younger children, given the price and age range. If parking matters, West Green House, The Savill Garden and Harcourt Arboretum all have it, with Harcourt's free. Pack a picnic for Harcourt or Oxford Botanic Garden, both allow you to eat outdoors.
