What it’s like
A series of small, distinct garden rooms to wander through, with children under 16 let in free.
This isn't one big lawn to sprint across. It's laid out as a sequence of separate garden rooms, each with its own character, so a visit is more of a wander from one space to the next than a run around. That makes it a slower sort of day out, better suited to kids who'll poke about looking at plants and corners than ones who need somewhere to charge around.
Entry is £10 for an adult and free for anyone 16 and under, which is generous if you've got a few children in tow and softens the sting of the ticket price. RHS members get in free on Fridays, worth remembering if you're already signed up. It's open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 3.30pm, right through until 1 November, so this is very much a spring-to-autumn visit rather than a year-round one.
The café does breakfast, lunch, bacon sandwiches and cake, described as proper homemade food rather than anything from a packet. Tables are first come first served with no reservations, so if you're planning to eat there it pays to head in earlier rather than later. Parking is limited on-site, with the overflow in the Church Lane laybys, and the garden itself is flagged as tricky going for wheelchairs, with some paths and areas harder to reach than others.
Groups of six or more can visit by prior arrangement, so it's worth sorting that ahead if you're coming with a few families together rather than just turning up.
