What it’s like
Free local history galleries with special exhibitions, a sensory bag on loan and a café for cake afterwards.
Free entry gets you round West Berkshire's own story, from ancient rocks up to the modern day, spread across permanent galleries with special exhibitions upstairs on the second floor. There's a programme of talks and family activities running through the year too, so it's worth a second visit even if you've done the main exhibition already.
It's a proper indoor option for a wet Wednesday, open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, with last entry at half three. Free entry is the obvious win here: no booking, no ticket price, just turn up. Lifts at each end and ramped access to the Welcome area mean it works well with a buggy or a wheelchair, and there's a sensory bag at reception with ear defenders, sunglasses and fidget toys if that helps your visit go smoother.
The café does hot drinks, cakes and gluten-free options, useful for breaking up a look round the galleries rather than planning a whole meal there. Pay and display parking is nearby, with Blue Badge spaces at the Corn Exchange and Library car parks, and it's an easy walk from Newbury railway station or a stop from the bus station opposite.
