What it’s like
Original Victoria Line carriages, working Marshall engines and free Sunday entry, with a £67 dining experience aboard the tube if you fancy it.
The tube carriages are the thing your kids will talk about: original Victoria Line stock you can climb into, sitting on a site that used to pump London's water. In the Pumphouse itself there are Grade II listed Marshall engines, and they run them at 12pm and 2pm, which is worth timing your visit around rather than arriving at half one and missing both.
Admission is free and they ask for a donation instead, which for a Sunday morning out is hard to argue with. If you want something more than a wander, there's a dining experience on one of the tube carriages from £67 per person, which is a proper treat rather than a casual lunch, so save that for a birthday or an anniversary rather than a random weekend with a four-year-old in tow. Sunday is the only day it opens, 10:30 to 16:00, and last entry is 15:45.
Because it's volunteers running the place, that's also why it's Sundays only, and phone lines are only answered during limited volunteering hours, so don't bank on getting through on a Tuesday if you've got a question. Parking is free at weekends on South Access Road and Essex Road, and it's a 7-minute walk from St. James Street Overground if you'd rather leave the car. Dogs are welcome in most areas of the museum, which is a nice touch if the walk there is part of the plan.
The engines at 12 and 2 are the fixed points in the day; build the rest of the visit around one of them. A couple of hours covers it comfortably, and 15:45 last entry means a late afternoon arrival doesn't leave you much time.
