BUGGY FRIENDLY

Yes

What it’s like

Free museum galleries, walled gardens and an old carriage collection to wander, plus outdoor play if the kids get restless indoors.

There's no admission fee here, which makes it an easy one to slot into a rainy Wednesday without worrying about wasting money if the kids only last an hour. Inside you've got interactive exhibitions and museum galleries doing local history, and the European carriage collection is a genuinely odd thing to stumble on with a seven-year-old who's never seen a horse-drawn vehicle up close.

Outside there's an outdoor play area and walled gardens to explore, though some of the garden routes have steps so it's not one for a buggy on autopilot. The site itself is big, and they're upfront that wide pushchairs and wheelchairs get restricted access in the Discovery Galleries and Period Gardens specifically, so if that's a concern it's worth going in with a plan rather than discovering it halfway round. They do lend self-propelled wheelchairs and mobility scooters if you call ahead, which is a decent workaround.

It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays outside school holidays, so don't turn up on a random Tuesday in term time expecting it to be open. The Garden Café does light bites and lunch, with hot food from midday to 4pm and halal options on the menu, but it's card only for the café, shop and anything at the door, so leave the loose change at home.

Parking's free on site with spaces for blue badge holders and coaches, which takes one worry off the list. Given there's no fee to get in, this is one of those places where you can just wander until the kids lose interest rather than feeling you have to make the most of a ticket.
