What it’s like

A slow loop of Poole Park's lake on a miniature steam-style railway, over almost as soon as it's begun but a proper hit with under-fives.

The whole thing is a ride around the freshwater lake in Poole Park, on a little engine pulling carriages that seat up to 32 at a time. It's not a long journey and it's not meant to be. For a small child who just wants to be on a train and wave at the ducks, it does the job nicely.

A standard ticket's £3.90, or there's a family ticket at £15 that covers two adults and three kids, which works out cheaper if you're not going solo. Card only though, so don't turn up expecting to pay cash. In spring and summer it runs daily from 10am to 4.30pm, but autumn and winter services thin out, so it's more of a "see what's running" visit once the weather turns.

Both pushchairs and wheelchairs can get onto the carriages. Dogs ride free too, if yours doesn't mind the rattle of a little engine. On a wet or blustery day it's worth a quick check of the Friends of Poole Park Railway Facebook group before you set off, since services can get cut on bad weather days without much other warning.

It's really a bolt-on to a wider trip round the park rather than something to build a whole day around. Given the ages listed, this one's squarely for the very youngest railway fans, the ones who'd happily ride round twice if you let them.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£3.90 for a standard ticket. A family ticket covering two adults and three children is £15.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link, you just turn up and buy on the day. Card only, so leave the cash at home.

What are the opening hours?

10am to 4.30pm through spring and summer, running daily. Autumn and winter services are less regular.

Is it OK for a toddler?

Yes, it suits the youngest riders best, a gentle loop of the lake rather than anything fast or thrilling.

Can we bring a pushchair or wheelchair?

The carriages are built to take both, so there's no need to fold anything up before boarding.

What happens if the weather's bad?

Services can be cut on poor weather days, especially in winter. The Friends of Poole Park Railway Facebook group posts updates if you want to check before setting off.
