Pontefract
What it’s like
Ruined castle ruins to scramble round for free, with a playground, dungeon tours and a café that lets dogs in too.
Free entry is the headline here, and it's not just the grounds, the whole castle site costs nothing to wander round. Kids get the run of the ruins, there's a Castle Playground open every day, and if you time it right there are family workshops and activities laid on in the school holidays. The bit that'll actually stick with them is probably the Dungeon Tours or the Explorer Tours, both of which you can book ahead if you want to make sure of a spot, though neither is required just to turn up and explore.
Because there's no ticket and no booking needed for a general visit, this is an easy one to slot into a morning without much planning. The grounds are open from half eight on weekdays and half nine at weekends, both till 5pm, though the Visitor Centre, gift shop and Keep Café keep their own hours, Tuesday to Sunday, so a Monday visit means the ruins but not the café or shop. Last entry is half an hour before closing, worth knowing if you're the sort who leaves everything to the last minute.
Being a historic ruin rather than a purpose built attraction, it's honest about not being fully wheelchair accessible everywhere, which is the trade off you get with somewhere this old. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout and can even come into the café with you, which is a nice touch if you're combining the visit with a walk. Parking is free in the car park behind the castle, though it can fill up fast on event days, so don't leave it too late if something's on.
The Keep Café does hot and cold drinks, snacks and cakes, with vegan, gluten-free and kids' options covered, open the same Tuesday to Sunday hours as the shop. If you're coming by train, Pontefract Baghill and Tanshelf stations both have step-free access and are about the same distance away, while Monkhill is closer to some but only reachable via a footbridge with steps.
