Larne

What it’s like

A free-to-visit ruined tower house with gun loops to spot, right on the harbour at Larne.

This is a four-storey ruined tower, the kind of stark stone shape that gets a "what's that?" from the back seat as you drive past. There's no entry fee, so it's an easy stop to bolt onto a walk along the harbour rather than a whole day out in itself. Kids can look for the gun loops in the walls and get a feel for how solid these old defensive towers actually were, even in their ruined state.

It won't take long. This is a look-and-wonder spot rather than one with hands-on activities or facilities, so treat it as a quick detour rather than the main event of your day. That said, a free ruin with real history behind it is hard to argue with when you're trying to stretch a visit without stretching the budget.

One thing to flag: public access is sometimes restricted when works are going on. There's nothing here in the way of a café or toilets from what's listed.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost to visit?

It's free entry, no ticket needed.

Do we need to book ahead?

No booking is mentioned, so it sounds like you just turn up.

What is there for kids to actually do?

There's a ruined four-storey tower to explore and gun loops in the walls to spot, rather than organised activities.

Is it always open to look around?

Public access is sometimes restricted when works are taking place, so it's worth having a backup plan if you're making a special trip.
