WHERE

Bournemouth

What it’s like

A small open farm where you go into the piglet pen, cuddle guinea pigs and let the free-roaming chickens steal the show.

You get a proper tour round with one of the team, not just a wander past pens. That means going into the piglet pen itself, spending time with the lambs and the goats (they're described as friendly, which is doing some of the work of the visit), and having a go at cuddling or stroking the guinea pigs and rabbits. The free-roaming chickens wander about doing their own thing and seem to be the bit visitors mention most, with several different breeds to spot.

Entry is £6 a person, which feels reasonable for a farm this hands-on rather than a big drive-through safari job. There's a park to play in and it sounds like a decent spot for a picnic once you've done the rounds of the animals, so you could easily turn an hour's visit into half a day if the weather holds.

It's open every day except Thursday, 10am to 4pm Monday to Wednesday and a bit later, till 4.30pm, Friday to Sunday. You can book ahead to guarantee someone's free to take you round, or just turn up and wait for a team member, though booking sounds like the safer bet if a farm tour is the whole point of going. Over the August bank holiday weekend (29 to 31 August) there's a Summer Bonanza with entry dropped to £5 and hours stretched to 5pm.

Birthday parties get an exclusive group farm tour and animal interactions thrown in, which sounds like a proper afternoon rather than a bolt-on. If you fancy more than a visit, there are Young Farmers sessions on Sundays and Home Education sessions on Tuesdays for getting stuck into actual yard jobs.
