What it’s like
Explore a huge medieval cathedral with a free floor tour, an exhibition gallery and hands on craft activities for kids.
Wander round one of the biggest cathedrals you will ever take your kids into, with a complimentary floor tour thrown in Monday to Saturday so you actually know what you are looking at. The exhibition gallery has genuine artefacts from the cathedral's history, and the discovery centre gives kids something to do with their hands, proper craft activities rather than just looking. There are gardens outside too if anyone needs to run around after all that standing still and looking up.
It suits a wide age range, right through from babies to teens, since under 16s get in free with a paying adult, up to four kids per adult. Adults pay £12.95 Monday to Saturday, and UK students go free as well, so it is a reasonably priced day out if you have got more than one child in tow. Sundays are shorter, open 11.45am to 2.30pm, so plan around that if that is your only day free.
It is all indoors, so this is a solid wet weather option, and it is step free with an accessible toilet and a changing places facility, which matters if you are pushing a buggy or need those extras. There is a café for a break plus a gift shop for the inevitable "can we buy something" on the way out, both open a bit longer than the cathedral itself, from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
Worth knowing before you go: services, graduations and special events sometimes close off certain areas, so it is not guaranteed you will see absolutely everything on the day. The Wren Library is shut at the moment for essential maintenance, so do not plan your visit around that. And if you land on an organ tuning day, be prepared for continuous loud notes, which some families find a bit much for a relaxed wander round.
