What it’s like

A guided tour round a historic house, a maze and adventure playground to burn through the afternoon, plus a bird of prey display in summer.

You get a guided tour through Leighton Hall itself, then the grounds do the rest of the work. There's a maze to get lost in, an adventure playground, and a Tree Face Trail through the woodland walk that gives younger kids something to hunt for once the house tour is done. Between May and September there's a bird of prey display too, which sounds like the bit worth timing your visit around.

The hall only opens Tuesday to Sunday afternoons, 1:30pm to 5:30pm, from May to September, so this isn't a morning-out kind of place. Full hall admission is £14.20 for an adult and £8.75 for a child aged 5 to 12, or you can do gardens only for £8.75 adult and £6 child if the tour feels like too much sitting still for your group. A family ticket covering two adults and up to three children comes in at £45.75 for the hall, which stings a bit less once you factor in the maze, playground and bird display are all included.

There's a craft corner running in the studio over the summer holidays, plus brass rubbings and a mini beasts activity, and every child gets a free activity pack to work through as they go round. Tearooms are open during hall hours for the inevitable ice cream stop. The house itself is where it gets tricky for buggies and wheelchairs, since the first floor isn't accessible, though the ground floor, gardens and woodland walk are manageable and there's blue badge parking on the main terrace.

Family dogs have to stay on the public footpaths by the car park rather than coming into the gardens or hall, so if your dog usually comes everywhere with you, this one's a car park and footpath job only. Assistance dogs get full access throughout.

How much does it cost?

£14.20 for an adult and £8.75 for a child aged 5 to 12 for the full hall admission. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children is £45.75. Gardens-only tickets are cheaper at £8.75 adult and £6 child.

What are the opening hours?

1:30pm to 5:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, from May to September. Outside that season it is pre-booked coach tours, private groups and schools only.

Do we need to book ahead?

There is no booking link listed for general visits, so during the open season you can turn up within the afternoon hours.

Is there a guided tour of the house?

Yes, admission includes a guided tour of the hall itself.

What is there for kids to do outside the tour?

A maze, an adventure playground, and a Tree Face Trail through the woodland walk. There is also a craft corner in the studio during summer holidays, brass rubbings and a mini beasts activity.

Is there a bird of prey display?

There is, running from May to September, which lines up with the general public opening season.

Can we bring the dog?

Family dogs can only use the public footpaths next to the car park, not the gardens or the hall itself. Assistance dogs have full access everywhere, including the tearooms.

Is the hall wheelchair accessible?

The ground floor, gardens and woodland walk are accessible, but the first floor of the hall is not reachable by wheelchair. A manual wheelchair is available on request if you call ahead, and there is blue badge parking on the main terrace.

Is there anywhere to eat?

There are traditional tearooms open during hall opening hours.

Can you visit just the gardens?

Gardens-only tickets are available at £8.75 for an adult and £6 for a child, skipping the hall tour.
