What it’s like

Multi-level laser combat with touch-screen guns and smoke effects, run in sharp 20-minute games for over-7s.

This is proper laser tag kit, not the bargain-bin version. Touch-screen guns with LCD displays, a multi-level arena with lights, music and smoke, and game modes beyond the usual point-and-shoot, think Zombie Infection, Capture the Flag, Highlander and Laserball. Games run 20 minutes and start on the hour and half past, so you turn up 15 minutes early for the briefing and get straight into it.

Minimum age is 7, with a guideline height of 106cm, so this isn't one for younger siblings tagging along. One game is £7, but most people do two or three (£12 and £16.50 per player), and there's a Family Pass at £22 for four players if you've got at least one adult and one child in the group. Students get in for £5.50 a game with ID, and if you're planning to make a habit of it, a £15 lifetime membership drops the price to £4.50 a game after that. Tuesday and Thursday run a 2-for-1 deal at the one-game price, which is the cheapest way in if your diary's flexible.

A single game is over quickly, so most families book two or three back to back, which turns a quick visit into an hour or so once you count the briefing. Weekend slots book out fast and they take payment to hold your place, with 24 hours' notice needed if plans change. Wear proper trainers, not sandals or anything with a heel.

For parties, the Trooper package is £14.75 a head (two games, invites, a 30-minute party room, party bags, two free adults) and Commander adds unlimited soft drinks for £17.50. Parties need a minimum of 6 children and max 20, plus a 50% deposit upfront. Parking's the usual city-centre story, Victoria Centre car park is close by, or street parking on Lennox Street and Huntingdon Street if you don't mind paying the meter.
