What it’s like

Three themed puzzle rooms in Reading, an hour on the clock to crack codes and get evidence, a scientist or a sci-fi machine sorted before time runs out.

You and your team get locked in for an hour with riddles, codes and a story to untangle. Pick from Dirty Money, where you're racing to secure evidence before a suspect walks free, Mad Scientist, which is exactly what it sounds like, or The Locktopus, a high-tech sci-fi puzzle room that scores your progress as you go. All three run to the same shape: sixty minutes, a team, and a countdown that makes even simple puzzles feel harder than they are.

This one's for older kids and adults, not a family outing with younger ones. The minimum age is 10, and anyone under 16 needs a parent with them in the room. The puzzles reward a mix of quick thinking and someone who's good at spotting patterns, so a team with a mouthy teenager and a patient adult probably does better than six people all shouting different theories at once.

The pricing rewards a bigger group: £33 a head for two people drops to £20 each if you can rustle up six. Booking's online and in advance, no turning up on spec, since the operator's running the room live and can't fit walk-ins around it. Arrive fifteen minutes early for check-in, because more than ten minutes late and you lose that time out of your hour with no refund, which feels harsh but is at least consistent.

Cancel more than 48 hours out and you'll lose a £10 admin fee but keep the rest. Leave it later than that and the booking's gone, though you get one free rebooking if you need to shuffle the date. There's no wheelchair access, so it's worth factoring that in before you book.

How old do you have to be to play?

Ten's the minimum, and anyone under 16 needs a parent in the room with them. No upper age limit, so it works for a mixed group of teens and adults.

How much does it cost?

It's priced per group and gets cheaper the more of you there are, from £33 each for two people down to £20 each for six.

Do we need to book ahead?

You do, it's all online in advance. They don't take walk-ins because the operator's live-running the room, though it's worth calling if you want to check same-day space.

What happens if we're late?

Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in. More than 10 minutes late and you'll lose that time out of your hour, with no refund.

Can we get our money back if we cancel?

More than 48 hours before your slot, you'll lose a £10 admin charge but get the rest back. Cancel later than that and there's no refund, though you can rebook once for free.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

No, there's no wheelchair access at the moment.
