What it’s like
A ruined medieval abbey to wander round, with a café for tea and cake once the legs give out.
There's something about a roofless old abbey that gets kids exploring without you having to suggest it. From what they list, singing in the Abbey is one of the things that happens here, and the acoustics in a stone shell like this must make even a wonky rendition of something from nursery sound half decent. Beyond that, it's the space itself doing the work: old walls, arches, and plenty of room to wander between them.
There's a café on site doing tea and cake, which is really all you need after a couple of hours of stone floors and stairs. It's not a big sit-down meal kind of place by the sound of it, more a stop for a warm drink and something sweet before you head back to the car.
Baby change and toilets are both on site, so a visit with a very small one isn't the faff it could be at an old ruin. There's parking too, which matters given it's not somewhere you'd want to be walking miles to reach with a buggy in tow.
It won't suit a rainy day if you're after somewhere fully under cover, since the abbey itself is open to the sky where the roof used to be. But for a dry afternoon of climbing about ancient stonework and finishing with cake, it does the job without costing you a fortune in entertainment.
Facilities

- Abbey Café serving tea and cake
- The abbey is open to the sky in places, so it's a dry-day visit rather than a shelter-from-rain one.
- Baby change is on site if you're bringing a little one.
- The café does tea and cake rather than a full menu, so eat before or after if you need more than that.
