WHERE
Kingston upon Thames
What it’s like
A concrete skatepark where under-10s get their own 10am to noon session, with a £10.70 pass you buy online in advance.
The draw is the concrete skatepark, and the under-10s get first go: a dedicated session from 10am to noon every day, school holidays included. After noon it opens to all ages, which is when you'd take a skate-mad nine-year-old anyway. If your child is 10 or over, they can only use that morning session when no younger kids are on the concrete, so the afternoon is the safer bet.
The catch is the access pass. It's £10.70, it's online only, and it can take up to five days to arrive, so this isn't a decide-on-Saturday outing. Under-16s need a parent or guardian to complete the form, and an attendant checks passes at the skatepark entrance. Five days is a long wait for a child who's just spotted a skateboard they like.
Rain stops play. The skatepark shuts when it's wet or there's standing water on the concrete, so a dry forecast matters more here than at most places. Away from the concrete there's playground equipment for under-13s, tennis courts for two, and a café in the park if you want to stretch the trip out. The park itself is locked at night and closes earlier in winter, around 4pm through December and January, with the gates possibly shut up to 20 minutes before the stated time.
Timing-wise, mornings are for the little ones and afternoons for everyone, so if you've got a four-year-old and an eleven-year-old they're really two different trips. In summer the park stays open until around 9pm, which makes an after-school skate easy from May onwards.

Do we need to book?
You need the pass before you turn up. Apply online and allow up to five days for it to arrive, so plan ahead rather than deciding on the day.

What time does the park close?
It varies by month, around 4pm in December and January and up to 9pm in June and July. Gates can shut up to 20 minutes early.
