What it’s like

Hire a rowing boat, canoe or KataKanu and paddle round the lake for an hour, no under-18s allowed out without an adult.

You pick your boat and go: a rowing boat, a canoe, or a KataKanu if you fancy something a bit different, hired out by the hour on the lake at Highfields Park. It's a straightforward way to spend a chunk of an afternoon, and the KataKanu option is the bit that makes this stand out from your average pedalo pond.

Pricing is by the hour, £7 for an adult and £6 for a junior, so a family of four in one boat isn't going to break the bank for a single hour. It runs daily until 4 October 2026, from 10:30am to 7pm, with last hire at 6pm, so don't turn up at quarter to and expect a full session on the water.

No under-18s are allowed on the lake without a parent or guardian, which is fair enough given it's open water, but worth knowing if you were picturing sending the teenagers off on their own while you sit with a coffee. It's weather dependent too, so a blustery day could mean it doesn't open at all.

Kids from around 3 upwards can go out with an adult, which makes this one for the slightly older toddler through to any age, rather than a babes-in-arms outing. An hour on a rowing boat is plenty for most families before arms get tired, and it's the sort of visit that works well tacked onto a wider wander round the park.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£7 an hour for an adult, £6 for a junior. It's charged per person, per hour of hire.

Do we need to book?

There's no booking link listed, so it looks like a turn-up-and-hire setup.

What age can kids go on the boats?

From around age 3, but no under-18s are allowed on the lake without a parent or guardian with them.

What happens if the weather's bad?

Opening is weather dependent, so a windy or stormy day could mean the boats don't go out at all.

What time can we last hire a boat?

Last hire is 6pm, even though the lake stays open until 7pm daily until 4 October 2026.
