What it’s like

Free weekly sessions for different ages, from Rhythm and Rhyme for babies to a Lego Club for primary schoolers.

This is a proper working library with a full timetable of children's sessions built around age groups, so you can pick the slot that actually suits your kid rather than turning up and hoping. Rhythm and Rhyme is for the 0 to 4s, Storytime covers 4 to 8 year olds, Lego Club takes 6 to 12s, and Book Bandits is aimed at 9 to 11s who want to talk books with other kids their age. All of it's free.

Opening hours shift about through the week, which is worth getting your head round before you plan a visit. Monday, Wednesday and Friday it opens at 9:30am, Tuesday not until 12:30pm, and Thursday it stays open until 8pm if you want an after-school or after-tea trip. Saturday's a short window, 9:30am to 1pm, so that's one for the early risers.

Beyond the sessions, it's got the things a good local library should: books and CDs to borrow, computers and wifi, a photocopier, printer and scanner, plus a study area and exhibition space if you're after something quieter. There's a public lift, disabled access and a hearing loop, and both regular and disabled parking on site, so getting in with a buggy or a wheelchair shouldn't be a fight.

It closes over the Christmas period, shutting from Thursday 24 December through to Monday 28 December 2026, and again on New Year's Day 2027. Otherwise it's open most days in some form, which makes it an easy one to drop into on a wet afternoon without much planning.
