What it’s like

Ruined priory ruins to wander freely among in Great Yarmouth, with crumbling walls and an undercroft to duck into.

This is a set of ruins you can walk right up to and around, the remains of a priory with old walls still standing in places and a refectory undercroft you can go down into. There's no set route and no guide pushing you along, so it works well if your kids like clambering about somewhere that feels a bit forgotten, or if you just fancy a quiet wander with some proper old stone underfoot.

It's open every day, 10am to 5pm, and under-fives don't need a ticket at all. Children aged 5 to 17 do need a child ticket, and while you can turn up on the day and sort tickets online there and then, English Heritage save the 15% discount for anyone who books ahead by midnight the night before. If you're the sort who plans a day out a week in advance, that's an easy saving; if you decide on the morning, you'll just pay the standard rate.

Getting into the undercroft means brick or wooden steps and the floor down there is dirt, with low bits of wall poking up. There's no car park on site, but you can park down the left side of the Priory Farm Restaurant car park and it's only a 25 metre walk from there.

Because it's free to get in as an under-five and there's no booking system forcing your hand, it suits a spontaneous stop as much as a planned visit. Just don't expect to phone ahead if you want to book, they don't take bookings that way.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost to get in?

Under-fives go free. Children aged 5 to 17 need a child ticket, and you'll pay less if you book online by midnight the day before your visit rather than on the day.

Do we need to book ahead?

You don't have to, you can book online on the day itself. Booking the night before gets you a 15% discount that day-of bookings miss out on.

Is there parking?

There's no car park on site, but you can use the left-hand side of the Priory Farm Restaurant car park, a 25 metre walk away.

Is it easy to get around with a pushchair?

The main ruins are fine to wander around, but the refectory undercroft is reached by brick or wooden steps with an uneven, dirt floor and low wall remains, so it's tricky with a pushchair.
