What it’s like

Paint your own pottery from hundreds of sponge patterns, then settle in for homemade scones and soup after.

You pick a piece, then a pattern, then get on with painting it. The studio lists hundreds of sponge designs to choose from, birds and flowers if you want something pretty, tractors and cars if you've got someone who'd rather paint a JCB than a jug. There's no rush written into it, you just work through the sponges until you land on the one you like.

It's open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and the café does proper homemade food rather than an afterthought of a vending machine. Scones, soup, paninis and traybakes, with gluten-free and vegetarian options if you need them, and they'll talk you through what's dairy free too. If you're marking a birthday you can bring your own cake along, as long as you've pre-booked food for the rest of the table.

Free parking on site takes away one of the usual faffs, and group bookings and parties are both catered for, so it works as well for a small birthday sitting as it does for two of you popping in on a Wednesday afternoon.
