What it’s like

Guided Nordic walking on Durdham Downs, poles provided, starting with a £10 beginner workshop.

This is an adult fitness thing rather than a kids' outing, poles included. You start with a beginner workshop, just over an hour, where they teach you the technique before you're allowed to join the regular hour-long guided walks on Durdham Downs. That training requirement might feel like a faff if you just want to turn up and walk, but Nordic walking technique isn't obvious and they're clear you need it first, either with them or elsewhere.

Once you're through the workshop, walks are pay as you go at £11 or bought in blocks of 5, 10 or 15, which brings the price down a fair bit if you're going regularly. Groups are capped at 16, and most walks run smaller than that. There's also a gentler, slower paced walk for anyone who doesn't fancy an hour at full pace.

Poles are provided, so you don't need to buy anything to get started, though you can bring your own if you've already got a pair. Proper waterproof walking shoes are the better shout; trainers work but your feet will get wet on damp grass. They walk rain or shine and only call it off for ice, snow or thunderstorms, refunding you if a class is cancelled.

Bring water if it's warm, and swap the handbag for a small backpack or bumbag. Booking's online, with a 24 hour cancellation window if your plans change.

How much does it cost?

The beginner workshop is £10, then walks are £11 pay as you go, or you can buy blocks of 5, 10 or 15 walks to bring the price down.
