WHERE

Tunbridge Wells

What it’s like

A proper theatre programme in Tunbridge Wells, with under-16s needing an adult alongside them and discounts if you book early.

This is a working theatre with a full programme of shows, and the practical bits matter more than usual here. Anyone under 16 has to be with an adult over 18, no exceptions, so it's not a drop-and-collect kind of venue. Babes-in-arms need their own ticket too unless a specific show says otherwise, which catches some people out when they're used to smaller venues waving a lap baby through free.

On price, the theatre releases lower-priced tickets on a first-come-first-served basis for every show, so booking early genuinely gets you a better deal rather than being a marketing line. There's also a GO Card scheme with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, £10 tickets for cardholders and their child dependants on eligible shows marked with a GO symbol, which is worth knowing about if you're on a limited income. Group and school bookings can get a discount too, but it's negotiated per event rather than a fixed rate.

Getting in and around is straightforward if you're on foot but a bit more of a faff with a buggy or a wheelchair. They'd rather you didn't bring a pushchair at all, storage is limited, so if you've got a baby in tow you're better off carrying or leaving the buggy at home. Wheelchair access into the foyer and auditorium is fine via a push-button door and lift, and a carer goes free with a full-price ticket, but the lift doesn't reach the circle, so if you need step-free access that's one to sort out when you book.

There's a café on site for a drink before curtain up or in the interval, and accessible toilets throughout. Parking is tight right outside, just one disabled bay directly by the theatre, with the Crescent Road car park as the main option and ground floor spaces there for anyone who needs them.

Plan your visit

Do children need an adult with them?

Yes, anyone under 16 has to be accompanied by someone 18 or over. Babes-in-arms need a ticket too unless the show states otherwise.

How do we get cheaper tickets?

Book early. Lower-priced tickets go on a first-come-first-served basis for every performance, and they get snapped up.

Can we bring a buggy?

They'd rather you didn't, storage space is limited. Worth leaving it at home if you can manage without.

Is it accessible for wheelchair users?

There's a push-button door and lift into the foyer and auditorium, plus one disabled parking space right outside. The lift doesn't reach the circle though, and only one carer ticket comes free per wheelchair user.

Are there discounts for groups or low incomes?

Group and school discounts get negotiated show by show, so you'd need to contact them directly. There's also a £10 ticket scheme through the council's GO Card for eligible shows.
