Abbots Pool
WHERE
Bristol
What it’s like
A quiet woodland pool with footpaths for a wander and a bridleway if anyone's brought a bike.
This one's for a walk, not a splash. The paths thread through woodland around the pool itself, and there's a bridleway running through if you fancy cycling rather than walking it. It's a proper unfussed spot, no cafe stand or gift shop pull, just trees and water and the sound of your own footsteps.
Swimming's off the cards here, and so are fires, barbecues and overnight camping, so don't turn up expecting a picnic-and-paddle sort of day. Dogs can come but they're kept out of the main pool itself, which is worth knowing if yours likes a swim. Anyone keen to fish needs a licence first, this isn't a turn-up-and-cast kind of lake.
The car park off Manor Road is small, which is the sort of detail that matters more than it sounds. Turn up on a sunny weekend and you might be circling for a space, so an early start or a weekday visit is the safer bet if you want to actually get parked.
It suits families happy with a straightforward woodland walk rather than a day of activities and facilities. Bring your own snacks and water, because there's nothing to buy once you're there.
