Meet costumed characters at The Workhouse and Infirmary and hear what life was like for the inmates who lived there.
Step back in time at The Workhouse and Infirmary in Southwell, where costumed characters bring the building's history to life. You'll meet people playing the roles of those who lived and worked here, hearing about the daily routines and hardships faced by inmates in this Georgian workhouse and Victorian infirmary. It's a way to get closer to the real stories behind one of the best-preserved workhouses in the country, built in 1824 for around 160 inmates. The event runs from 17 to 31 October 2026, with sessions from 11:30 to 14:30. Entry is included with a standard visit to the property, which is open Wednesday to Sunday with no booking system, so you simply turn up and check in at the visitor reception building. There's a café in the Infirmary for hot and cold drinks, pasties, croque monsieurs, bakes, cakes and ice cream, plus free parking 200 metres from the site. Upper floors of The Workhouse are stairs only, but there's a lift in the Infirmary and a fully accessible outdoor route, with mobility scooters available to hire.
