David Threlfall stars as King Lear in a new production of Shakespeare's tragedy at the Royal Exchange, age guidance 16+.

Matthew Dunster directs and adapts this new staging of Shakespeare's King Lear, with David Threlfall returning to the Royal Exchange after 27 years to take the title role. The production charts Lear's descent as power corrupts a kingdom and his family turns against itself, running at approximately 3 hours including an interval. Age guidance is 16+, so this is one for older teens and adults rather than younger children. There's an exclusive Schools and Colleges performance on Wednesday 21 October 2026 at 1pm with discounted £15 tickets, bookable via a separate request form. Standard tickets start from £12 plus a £2 booking fee, and the run includes audio described, captioned and sensory adapted performances on selected dates.
