Free terrier celebration at the Pit Yard with a dog walk, puppuccinos and puppy portraits.
The National Coal Mining Museum is holding a Terrier Meet Up in the Pit Yard, a free celebration of all types of terriers. The day starts with the Terrier Trail at 11am, a dog walk meeting at the Hub, followed by free puppuccinos for dogs (first come, first served) and free puppy portraits from 11.45am at the gazebo opposite the Hub. There's also a ride on the Terrier Train, weather permitting, at £2.50 per person with dogs going free. Terriers have strong links to Britain's mining communities, where they were kept as working dogs in and around the pits. In Bedlington, Northumberland, miners kept Bedlington Terriers to help control rats and other vermin threatening food stores and equipment, while Yorkshire Terriers started out as ratcatchers in industrial Yorkshire before becoming popular companion dogs.
